Because really, wetin man go do?
Sometime ago, I had a conversation with a friend of mine (identity withheld because he’s wanted by the feds) and we concluded that many Nigerians have been in and are currently in the “wetin man go do phase of life”.
This post is for those that are tired of where they are and refuse to settle in the ‘wetin man go do’ phase and need a little oomph to stop being stationary. They’re tired of sacrificing so much of themselves that they have almost nothing left in them. Tired of having to live a life other than what they had imagined or expected for themselves. If this is you, it’s time to get up and get out of that position.
Wetin man go do translates into English as ‘what can a man do?’ (Read man as man, woman, girl, boy etc.)
In this context, it means to look at one’s current situation and wonder at how things had gotten to the level one is in and just give up because sometimes in life there’s nothing that can be done.
So when asked why life going that way or how life is,the reply will be ‘wetin man go do?’. This reply is usually accompanied with a sigh, shrug and/or a smile that denotes melancholy.
In an attempt to survive the world of today, we end up sacrificing a large portion of ourselves, our dreams and most times our happiness.
For instance, I’m a girl who is in love with life and wants to be able to discover/ identify the beauty of life no matter the situation. For its the beauty that makes life worth it and gives the zeal to carry on. Travelling, photography and writing are my major passions and like the next person, all I want is to be able to make my passion a source of my income/ livelihood in life.
If things don’t click the way I envisioned, I’ll have to settle for a regular 9 – 5 situation. Let’s say I do, I become a figure in the statistics like every other 9- 5ver.
Years down the line, I never get the chance to break out of that and then the typical life happens; marriage, children, more responsibilities etc. And down the line, if anyone from my past asks me why I stopped living I’ll have to be in wetin man go do phase.
Back to life, there are some people that actually want to get a 9 – 5 as they’re in it for the security it brings and can’t imagine any other thing.
What I’m saying in essence, we have our various callings and settling for something that just happened if it means sacrificing a bit of yourself each time you have to perform just doesn’t appeal. It’s time to get back out there and fight to get out of that phase.
Because at the end of the day, if you’re not happy, is life worth it?
